This adventure will concentrate mainly on the Zambezi Region of Namibia (Caprivi). An expert bird-guide that resides in Katima Mulilo will accompany us at all times and his local knowledge would be extremely advantageous in tracking a lifer like the Leaflove.

We will explore various regions like the floodplains of the Zambezi River, the Nkasa Rupara National Park’s forests on the Linyanti River and Chobe National Park in Botswana.

With such a variety of habitats/vegetation we are bound to find a lot of different bird-species, from Rosy-throated Longclaws to Finfoots. As the summer visitors would have arrived, we will also spot Broad-billed Rollers and thousands of Southern Carmine Bee-eaters floundering about their nests. Whether it is on foot (where safe), safari-vehicle or on a boat on the majestic waterways, we will leave no stone unturned for that perfect sighting!

These areas are also teeming with game and are a feast for bird-watchers and photographers alike. A herd of elephants playfully crossing the waterways might just be your next money-shot!

The closest airport to Katima Mulilo is Kasane and this is where all guests will be arriving and departing from.

Tour plan

Katima Mulilo (CHS) - 1 night

You will fly into Kasane and transfer to our lodge at Katima Mulilo. (Flights are excluded from the cost.) After we have unpacked and settled in we will enjoy the sunset at the Carmine Bee-eater’s nests. Dinner will be served at our lodge on the banks of the Zambezi River.

Nkasa Rupara National Park - 2 nights

After enjoying early-morning coffee and rusks we will set out to find the Yellow-Throated Leaflove, Schalow’s Turaco and other spectacular birds in the area. Then back to CHS for breakfast. From here it is a 2-hour drive to our safari tents at Nkasa Lupala Lodge, where we will be staying for 2 nights, hopefully with hippos serenading us at night.

The park’s terrain and habitat is similar to the Linyanti area of Botswana with similar animals like lions, leopard, elephants, cheetah, buffalo, red lechwe, reedbuck, wild dog and many more. We will set out on game drives in the park and enjoy a boat cruise on one of the many channels of the Linyanti River.

Depending on water levels we can also, either do a mokoro ride or a guided walk in the wilderness.

Zambezi & Chobe River - 2 nights

After breakfast we will head back to Katima Mulilo for some ice-cream and then onto the houseboats of Caprivi Houseboat Safaris. The accommodation on the boat is rooftop tents with porter-potty toilets as ablutions. Late afternoon the boats will moor on land where we will enjoy dinner around the campfire with our feet in the sand (be on the lookout for lions!). We will spend the first night on the banks of the Zambezi and the next night on the banks of Chobe River, opposite the Chobe National Park.

Serondela Lodge - 2 nights

The houseboat will drop us off at the Serondela Lodge in the Caprivi. The lodge is situated opposite the Serondela picnic site in the Chobe National Park. Take in the spectacular views from the deck or swimming pool whilst enjoying something cold and watch the elephants having a drink and splashing about in the river.

Early morning, we will do a village walk and look for birds on the flood plain. After another relaxing day, we will enjoy a sunset boat cruise on the river. This area is known for leopard sightings and we will certainly look for one.

Home

After an early breakfast on the deck watching the animals come and go in Chobe, it is an hour’s boat ride to Kasane immigration (with game viewing en route). If time allows, we will enjoy a short game drive in Chobe National Park.

From there it is a 10-minute drive to the airport and your flight home.

This is not a goodbye but only till next time!

If you want to stay longer in Kasane/Chobe then we can assist you with bookings.
