TOUR PLAN

We will, to a great extent follow the trail of Sylvester, the lion, by walking a circular route for about 103km over five days through the beautiful Karoo. This part of the Karoo cannot be seen from the high ways. The hiking trail will be clearly marked and every one walks at their own pace.
Day 1: Arrival at Welgemoed campsite
Everyone arrives from about 15h00 at Welgemoed campsite, which is about 71 km from Beaufort West. Everyone has to put up their own tents. Bush toilets and a bucket with warm water for a shower will be provided. The vehicles will remain here until the hike ends.
Day 2: Oukloof 27.5 km
The first stage is quite a lengthy walk but relatively easy because it is mainly downhill or on a level road. As a result the other days will be shorter walks. We will walk on a two trail road in the upper areas of the Koekemoers River. Today will be a combination of a two trail route and somewhat bigger gravel roads.

We will be walking in the shade of numerous Soetdoring (Sweet Thorn) trees, which form a welcome veranda for the long walk. Be on the look-out and listen for kudus in the vicinity. The last few kilometres will be through the beautiful Oukloof Pass, during which we will cross the winding river 11 times.
Day 3: Tweefontein 26 km
At first the walk will be uphill, but once we get to the ravine it levels out. We will now be on the edge of the African plateau. The plateau is on the Nuveld Mountains and is a completely different environment without any thorn trees. Here you will witness the open plains of the Great Karoo!
Day 4: Kareebos 22.5 km
We will be descending into the upper reaches of the Leeu River, next to the Leeukloof farm house. Today we will follow a two trail route. The surrounding nature will undergo a visible change with red koppies and deep river reaches.
Day 5: Welgemoed 27 km
We will walk for a long way alongside the border of Karoo National Park. This route might offer numerous wild life sightings. Today there will also be an option, for those who are interested, to see where Sylvester escaped. The last 7km of day 5 will spoil you with the most breath taking panoramic views. Sadly it is also our last day together and each one can relax before starting their long journey home.
